About
HopSonic, based in Austin, Texas, is an independent radio station formed in the fall of 2009. We stream globally via hopsonic.com and rebroadcast locally on FM 97.7 KCYP in McAllen, Texas. Each show is produced by resident DJs Meylo Rodriguez and Jose “Joe” Gonzalez.
The Hopcast
Each Wednesday night from 8pm-10pm CST we broadcast live from the HopSonic living room in the Travis Heights borough of The Capital City. Our focuses are simple: great music and great beer. We review hot music off the record rack and cold delights from the beer cooler.
Musically we cover anything and everything with a heavy focus on new releases. We aim to expose our listeners to indie and alternative tunes across many genres. We keep it eclectic while managing to keep it fun. We also feature guest DJs and live in-studio sessions.
We are major supporters of local breweries. So when we’re not chasing the brewmeisters around trying to find out what the next beer to hit the streets is, we are exposing micro-brews nation wide. And when we are not doing that… well, there’s the rest of the beer world to explore. Pilsners, Pale Ales, Bocks and Hefe’s, we love beer. We drink live and on the air and we ain’t shy about it either!
The Staff
Meylo Rodriguez
A native of deep South Texas just miles away from the Mexican border, Meylo’s musical experiences date back to the summer of 1986 when he DJed a friend’s birthday party. By 1991 he was mixing records at night clubs and raves and DJing gigs as large as Lalapalooza. In 2007 he moved to Austin to further his career as an interactive designer, and that’s where he teamed up with his long time buddy Jose. Together they launched HopSonic Radio. Meylo’s musical tastes range from Singer/Songwriter, Folk and Country to Funk, Nu-soul, and of course, House.
Jose “Joe” Gonzalez
After moving from Washington at a very early age to a little town called San Juan, Texas, Jose was introduced to the world of punk and metal at the ripe age of 12. By 1995 he had transitioned himself to the Drum n’ Bass scene. During college he dabbled in DJing house parties and radio broadcasting and that was enough to get him excited about internet radio. After moving to Austin in 2008 he teamed up with Meylo and they formed HopSonic Radio a year later. His musical focuses are broad and range from Dub-Step, Drum n’ Bass, and Chill Wave to Punk and Metal.
